		<description>Thanks Nate! It is great to hear from you. I didn&#039;t have time to take the non-iTunes approach, but did make it to the store to get the new version. Plenty of adventures there. I will throw up a post to recap. It was kinda fun!</description>

i went through the same problem.
Go here: 

http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-4956.20080710.V50OI/iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw

this will allow you to download the 2.0 update onto your desktop.  it is the same update..it just does not require the apple server to get it.

then (once you&#039;ve downloaded it). 
go into iTunes (make sure its the new 7.7 version)...and hold down SHIFT and click on Restore.  this should bring up a window to allow you to select the file you just downloaded on your desktop.

Select the file...click OK...and you&#039;re off.
it will install the firmware..and then take a bit to restore your phone.

Then you can monkey ball...till your hearts content.
